Video is the new book. (Professional Speaking. Episode 288)

Uncategorized Jul 06, 2020

Don't get me wrong - I love the book. But in this video (Yes, I did a video about why we should be doing more videos) I argue for why thought leaders should share their knowledge more through video.

The word "Author" actually means "creator", not "writer" and today we have more ways of getting our message across. Video is one of the most powerful ones. If you are not using it to communicate your message you are missing a wonderful way of spreading your message.

Before you write the book, share your insights from your research as videos. You reach more people, get more feedback, have a bigger chance of having people spread your message. A bonus is that people get to see you spread your message which will increase the chance of them booking you for that speech.

Let's be "video authors" - ie use video to create content that moves people!

Professional Listening. (Professional Speaking. Episode 286)

Uncategorized Jun 16, 2020

In this week's lesson we talk about why it is so important to constantly and consistently keep doing interviews to collect new, better, and more relevant content.

In the month of May 2020 I did 24 one-hour interviews with people in 10 different countries on 3 continents, from famous car-designers, to artists and heads of innovation at big, global companies.

The best way to learn is to teach, they say. But it is equally true that: The best way to teach is to learn. We have two ears and one mouth. Make sure you spend more time listening and collecting and creating content than you promoting your speaking.

Do you agree?

"My most valuable lesson from 20+ years as a professional speaker: Do not be a speaker." Professional Speaking Episode 285.

In this episode of Professional Speaking I share one of the biggest insights I have had in two decades of speaking. It is about the power of, and value of, finding and defining your "Brand Moniker”.

It is about not being or defining yourself as “a speaker”.

And it might just change how you look at speaking, the profession of “being a speaker” and about what you do.

Find your Brand Moniker and you find your true direction.

I am "The Creativity Explorer". What is your "Brand Moniker”?

The Big Virtual Speaking Debate: Sitting down or Standing up? (Professional Speaking. Episode 284.)

In this episode of Professional Speaking I have made a video about the two "camps" in virtual speaking: Should you be standing up or should you be sitting down?

In the video I show some of the advantages and disadvantages of each approach to help you master both.

And to be clear: I am in BOTH camps :) I think some speeches are better delivered sitting down and some are better delivered standing up. It depends on the speaker, the topic, the audience, the brief, the client and so on.

Make sure you master both so you can use the most appropriate technique. (And if you have a favourite technique that is fine too :) My favoruite is standing up.)

As an audience member which technique do you prefer, let me know in the comments?

A few simple steps to transition from a "zoom presentation" to a proper Virtual Speech Experience. (Professional Speaking. Episode 283.)

For this week I created a short video (2+ minutes) where I show the difference between a “normal web cam experience” and a “professional virtual speaking experience”. The difference is amazing.

As professional speakers we should deliver professional virtual speeches - not just “webinars” or “zoom calls”.

That means that it just is not enough to use the normal equipment on your computer, you need to upgrade to a “virtual speech set up”.

Check out the short video to see the difference that a few, simple tweaks can create.

The future of online events is (almost) here, and it will blow us away, and perhaps just change meetings forever. (Professional Speaking. Episode 282)

MAY 22, 2020 BY FREDRIK HAREN

Could meetings go truly virtual and what would that mean for speakers? To find out I checked out some of the current technologies available.

As in-person conferences have been canceled around the globe recently we have instead been gathering on Zoom to “see” each other. But Zoom is "so early 2020”, and you can only get so excited about seeing a bunch of thumbnail video windows.

Let’s instead look at what is around the corner - or in some cases AT the corner - for how we could meet virtually.

(I will link to all the companies mentioned in the comments, because of LinkedIn's STUPID habit of limiting the spread of posts with links in them.)

Teooh

Teooh has combined the virtual world with simplicity.

As a user you still have to download an app, but then the user experience is simple. You get to create your avatar to look like (or not look like) yourself and then you are let into a 3D rendered conference room where you can sit at a...

The good news about professional speaking in these Corona crisis. (Professional Speaking. Episode 280.)

April 30, 2020 By Fredrik Haren

Four different events this week have made me feel that the people who book speakers are now getting serious about moving keynote speeches online.

When the Coronavirus hit the world a lifetime ago (well, ok, two months ago or so, but you know what I mean) speakers started to see their bookings being cancelled as conferences got shut down. The professional speaking world got ready for some lean times. The longer the crisis goes on the more obvious it becomes that the time for large gatherings of groups of people is still far off.

That is the bad news. (Especially for the MICE industry.)

The good news is that it seems that clients have drastically shifted their views on virtual keynotes

And before you start filling the comment field with comments like “This is nothing new: I have been doing webinars for X weeks/months/years” please read the whole post. ;)

Some clients have booked virtual speakers for ages. And some clients were faster...
